Hola, my friends. This was a tense stretch for the Truckee and Donner Summit community in July 2024. The Royal Fire brought smoke, firefighting aircraft and close attention to the country around Royal Gorge.
The official incident record
CAL FIRE's final record lists the Royal Fire as starting July 7, 2024, in Placer County, burning 215 acres and reaching 100% containment. Read the official Royal Fire incident record.
The original July 10 post described conditions while crews were still working. Its evacuation, road and heat references belonged to that reporting period. They should not be used to make a decision today.
Thanks to the people doing the work
Having lived through the Angora, Tamarack and Caldor fires, I know how quickly a familiar skyline can change the mood of a day. My thanks to the firefighters, support teams and local reporters who kept the community informed through this one.
That gratitude belongs here in the record. So does a clear date.
